Westfield Matildas v Norway: fixture history

The Westfield Matildas will head to this year’s Algarve Cup in a confident mood following an incredible series of results and performances in 2017.

One of their group opponents is European side Norway, who are currently ranked equal 14th in the world alongside Korea Republic.

He’s a brief history of our record against the Norwegians.

Australia has faced the  Norwegians five times in their history, with the very first meeting coming way back in 1988.

The Europeans won the first three encounters, including a 7-1 drubbing in a friendly in Oslo in 1997.

But the Westfield Matildas have enjoyed some success more recently, with both of the last two clashes coming at FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments.

In 2007 at the World Cup in China, the two nations were drawn in the same group and played out a 1-1 draw.

Lisa De Vanna’s 83rd minute goal salvaging a draw for the Westfield Matildas who finished second in the group behind Norway.

And Australia’s only win over the Norwegians came four years later at the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

Despite going behind in the second half, a brace from Kyah Simon handed the Aussies a 2-1 win as they advanced through the group.
