Westfield Matildas to take on Thailand in farewell friendly in Perth

The Westfield Matildas will play their first-ever match in Perth next month as the team’s preparations for the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Jordan intensify.

Perth’s nib Stadium will be the scene of the Westfield Matildas’ farewell friendly against fellow 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup participants Thailand on Monday, 26 March 2018.

Tickets to the fixture, which start at $10 for children and $20 for adults, will go on sale tomorrow (Thursday, 15 February 2018) at 9am local time (12pm AEDT). The match will also be shown live on FOX SPORTS and SBS VICELAND.

The game between the Westfield Matildas, who are currently ranked fourth in the world, and Thailand, 30th, will feature one of Western Australia’s top sporting stars, Samantha Kerr.

Kerr, who has received a host of accolades for her exploits on the pitch over the past 12 months, joined Westfield Matildas Head Coach Alen Stajcic at nib Stadium today as the match was officially announced.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chief Executive Officer, David Gallop, is delighted that the Westfield Matildas will play in Perth before jetting to Jordan.

“Over the past 12 months the Westfield Matildas have gone from strength to strength both on and off the pitch,” said Gallop.

“Following the team’s triumphant display at the inaugural Tournament of Nations in the United States, our girls have played and performed exceptionally in front of strong crowds in New South Wales and Victoria.”

“Now it’s Western Australia’s turn to see the Westfield Matildas in their backyard. We trust that the football and sporting communities of ‘WA’ will turn out in record numbers to send the squad off to the Asian Cup in style.”

“We thank the Government of Western Australia for its support in making this match happen,” concluded Gallop.

Westfield Matildas Head Coach, Alen Stajcic, said the friendly against Thailand will provide a timely tune-up for his team ahead of their 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup assault.

“Thailand secured qualification for this year’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup last April after topping their qualification group, and in the last 14 months have played 19 friendly or competitive matches,” Stajcic explained.

“There is a concerted effort going into developing Thai football domestically and internationally, so this will be a solid hit out for our squad before we venture to Amman where we will be aiming to win the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for a second time,” he said.

The top five teams at the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup will qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in France.

Prior to March’s friendly in Perth, the Westfield Matildas will continue their preparations for the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup at the 2018 Algarve Cup in Portugal. Australia will play Norway, China PR, and hosts Portugal at the invitational tournament.
