Westfield Matildas: NWSL weekend wrap

Sam Kerr continues to re-write the record books with her goal-scoring exploits while a quartet of Aussies also enjoyed success in the NWSL over the weekend.

SAM KERR

The Aussie was short-listed last week for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and showed why with a stunning four-goal haul in Sky Blue FC’s thrilling 5-4 win over Seattle Reign.

With her side trailing 3-0 at the break, Kerr cut loose in the second half, netting three goals in just over 20 minutes to restore parity.

But she wasn’t finished. With the game locked at 4-4 deep in stoppage time, Kerr headed home from a well-weighted corner to hand Sky Blue an incredible comeback victory.

The Matildas star also become the first player to score four goals in a single game in NWSL history.

Kerr has now netted 15 goals in 17 games this season to lead the NWSL golden-boot race ahead of USA superstar Megan Rapinoe (12 goals).

STEPH CATLEY & ALANNA KENNEDY

The Aussie duo both played full games as Orlando Pride downed struggling Boston Breakers 2-1 to consolidate their spot in the top four.

USA international Alex Morgan netted in either half for the visitors.

Kennedy and Catley were both shown yellow cards during the contest.

HAYLEY RASO AND ASH SYKES

The Matildas speedsters both saw plenty of action as their Portland Thorns outfit recorded their fifth straight home victory with a 2-0 triumph over Houston Dash.

Sykes got through a full game for the hosts while Raso was substituted with just over 10 minutes remaining as the Thorns solidified second spot on the NWSL table.
