Westfield Matildas: NWSL weekend wrap

A host of Westfield Matildas enjoyed wins in America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) over the weekend but Sam Kerr’s Sky Blue FC weren’t so fortunate.

STEPH CATLEY AND ALANNA KENNEDY

The Westfield Matildas defensive duo both played full games as Orlando Pride were too strong for Boston.

The Pride ran out convincing 4-2 winners to remain in fourth position on the NWSL ladder.

Catley and Kennedy will both be in action against this weekend as Orland take on Seattle.

ASHLEIGH SYKES

The pacy attacker played the first half as Portland Thorns thumped Washington Spirit 4-0.

The big win consolidates Thorns second-spot on the table ahead of their clash with Boston this weekend.

Fellow Westfield Matildas star Hayley Raso missed the match for Portland.

LYDIA WILLIAMS

Williams, who only recently signed for Seattle, played the full 90 minutes and kept a cleansheet as the Reign beat Houston Dash 1-0.

The experienced shot-stopper made three saves, with Merritt Mathias scoring the only goal for Seattle.

Reign are now in fifth spot on the NSWL standings and take on Orlando in the next round.

SAM KERR

It was a tough outing for Kerr’s Sky Blue FC as they were crushed 4-1 by FC Kansas City.

Kerr, who played the full 90 minutes, was well-marked by the Kansas defence who were well-aware of the threat she possesses.

Sky Blue FC remain in sixth position ahead of this weekend’s clash with Washington Spirit.
