Westfield Matildas at Home: Sydney stay top of the table

The Westfield W-League is now halfway done with a clear pack leader streaking ahead.

Sydney FC had two games in five days and looked unstoppable in both. The Sky Blues kicked off the round in Melbourne, defeating City 2-0 in the grand final rematch.

Remy Siemsen added to her goal tally after breaking her drought last weekend, while Natalie Tobin’s pinpoint header secured all three points.

Westfield Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah pulled out more top shelf saves put couldn’t prevent these two goals. While Emma Checker and Jenna McCormick had their hands full with the attacking threats of Ante Juric’s side.

Alex Chidiac was again a bright spot for the Melbourne team, combining well with the likes of Harriet Withers and Chinatsu Kira.

Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers played out a 2-2 draw. Twice the Reds went ahead, firstly through Chelsie Dawber, then through Dylan Holmes only for the Wanderers to peg them back. Seventeen year old Sarah Hunter scored the first goals of her Westfield W-League career, bagging a brace to earn Western Sydney a point.

Melbourne Victory were big winners in a 4-2 triumph over the visiting Newcastle Jets. A Melina Ayres double, a debut goal for Kiwi Claudia Bunge, and a low driving strike from Kyra Cooney-Cross were enough to beat the spirited Jets.

Goals from Tara Andrews and Rhianna Pollicina kept Newcastle in the match, but the visitors couldn’t overcome a strong Victory attack.

The likes of Ayres, Cooney-Cross, American Catherine Zimmerman, and Lisa De Vanna off the bench proved too much for the Jets defence to handle.

Sydney carried on their winning ways to round out the action in their top of the table clash against Canberra. Mackenzie Hawkesby opened the scoring before Cortnee Vine notched her third goal of the campaign.

A Remy Siemsen double has catapulted her into the golden boot conversation, particularly as Michelle Heyman did not add to her tally against a solid Sydney defence.
