The Westfield Young Matildas secured one of their biggest ever wins, after slamming 18 goals past a hapless India at the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship qualifying tournament in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Australia led 10-0 at the break before claiming another eight goals in the second half, with both Sophie Hogben and Ashleigh Sykes grabbing four goals in the mammoth win.

Rachel Quigley also grabbed a hat-trick; Samantha Kerr scored a brace, while Teresa Polias, Browyn Studman, Kyah Simon, Karina Roweth and Emily Van Egmond all grabbed single goals.

From the opening whistle there was only going to be one winner and once Polias opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a rocket from the edge of the box, the flood gates simply opened.

Two minutes later it was Kerr, sister of AFL star Daniel Kerr, who shot home from close range and she was on hand again in the 14th minute to make it 4-0. Hogben, in between, scoring her first goal with a cracking volley.

Hogben made it 5-0 in the 20th minute, before Sykes then went on a 20-minute scoring blitz with goals in the 22, 27, 37 and 43rd minutes. Quigley broke her sequence of goals with her first after 32 minutes.

It was much the same straight after the half time break, with Hogben netting her hat-trick, while Quigley made it 12-0 after 52 minutes.

Hogben completed her scoring in the 69th minute, with Studman, Quigley, Simon, Roweth and Van Egmond bringing the final tally to 18.

Head coach Alen Stajcic proved the depth of talent available in the squad by selecting a different starting line up to their first match on Wednesday which saw the Westfield Young Matildas defeat Chinese Taipei 3-0.

“It was a good steady and professional performance by the players today,” said Stajcic.

“They made the most of their opportunities with the better execution of play predominantly coming in the front third.

“Despite today-s final score, I hope to see continuing improvement for our next matches.”

The Westfield Young Matildas will meet IR Iran on Wednesday, followed by Thailand on Friday 7 November.
