Superstar Sam Kerr sets challenge to Victorian fans for November games

“Beat the sell-out crowds in September for the Matildas”. That’s Sam Kerr’s challenge to Victorian fans for two exciting internationals next month in the southern state.

The Westfield Matildas face China PR in Melbourne and Geelong on November 22 and 26.

And after some stunning crowds in NSW in September when the Aussie women twice beat Brazil , Kerr wants Victoria to match – and beat – NSW to show why they have such a reputation on the sporting stage.

“They say Melbourne’s the sporting capital of the world. So they have to beat the 16,800.

“So if they don’t beat it that crown is gone!” she declared on the Matildas’ Facebook Live on Thursday.

In September a sold-out crowd in Penrith of around 17,000 saw the Matildas defeat Brazil. This was followed by a crowd of almost 17,000 in Newcastle to see the Aussie inflict a third defeat on Marta's side this year.

And the new Women’s Health Women in Sport Sportswoman of the Year wants the love of the fans to continue.

“I love playing in front of a crowd that’s a majority of Aussies. Playing in Newcastle was amazing," said Kerr.

“Playing under lights was awesome and to feel that kind of love and support when you play really helps you out.”
