Schwarzer helps Chelsea to Capital One quarters

Mark Schwarzer has shown he still has what it takes to man the goals for the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup after keeping a clean sheet this morning for his club side Chelsea against London rivals Arsenal in the Capital One Cup.

Schwarzer repaid Jose Mourinho-s faith in the fourth round clash as Chelsea claimed a 2-0 victory as goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata sent them into the quarter-finals.

While both teams made numerous changes to their sides that took the field for their respective English Premier League matches over the weekend, the 41-year-old showed that he will be more than apt replacement for first choice keeper Petr Cech throughout the season.

Chelsea dominated throughout the match but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger unleashed two of this season-s top performers in Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud to pressure the Chelsea goal in the latter stages of the match.

Schwarzer easily saved Nicklas Bendtner-s header on 10 minutes before not being threatened again until the hour mark when Santi Cazorla-s bobbling shot forced the Australian to make the save.

Arsenal-s best chance on goal saw Giroud fire from close range but Schwarzer again up to the task as he again kept the Gunners out.

Schwarzer's performance will have pleased both Mourinho and new Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou who will undoubtedly be looking forward to the stalwart retaining his form all the way to Brazil next June.

Chelsea have been joined in the quarter-finals by Manchester United, West Ham, Leicester and Stoke.

Three ties remain to determine the final teams to progress with Newcastle taking on Manchester City and Tottenham clashing with Hull tomorrow morning. Sunderland and Southampton will fight it out for the final spot in early November.
