The Australian injured his ankle against Leeds United earlier this month and was expected to be out for just a couple of matches, but further scans have revealed he has ligament damage.
"He's damaged ligaments in his ankle, so it's never a week or so," Mowbray told the BBC.
"He'll have two or three weeks in a cast, and then we'll reassess once he has that off and starts running to see how bad it is," he said.
"Let's hope we can see him again this season and he's got a part to play." The news comes as a huge blow to Borough as they fight for promotion back into the Premier League.
Borough are currently sitting sixth in the league on 60 points and are in a playoff spot, alongside West Ham, Brighton and Hove and Blackpool, but have Birmingham, Cardiff and Hull within one win of them.
