Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Victorian Government today announced that the Qantas Socceroos will host Jordan in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier match at Docklands in Melbourne on Tuesday 11 June 2013 (7.30pm kick-off).
Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Victorian Government today announced that the Qantas Socceroos will host Jordan in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier match at Docklands in Melbourne on Tuesday 11 June 2013 (7.30pm kick-off).
This will be the second time that the Qantas Socceroos will face Jordan having met for the first time in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier in September which Jordan won 2-1 in Amman.
The venue has a good history of holding Qantas Socceroos matches having first hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier against Qatar in 2008 and an AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Oman in 2009 with the last international match played at the venue a friendly against Serbia on 5 June 2011.
At Hyundai A-League level the venue regularly hosts Melbourne Victory matches and has seen three Hyundai A-League Grand Finals. It is also has the honour of having the highest ever Hyundai A-League crowd of 55,436 (Hyundai A-League 2007 Grand Final) and highest regular season crowd of 50,333 (Round 16 Hyundai A-League 2006/07 season, Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC).
FFA CEO David Gallop made the announcement today at the venue and believes that local fans will support the Qantas Socceroos in numbers.
"The Victorian sporting public have always provided huge support for the Qantas Socceroos and I-m looking forward to a great atmosphere at this world-class venue," said Gallop.
“With tickets going on sale so early, it-s also a great opportunity for interstate football fans to plan ahead and get to Melbourne to support our team as well.
“Everyone knows our FIFA World Cup qualifying group is extremely competitive and this important home game is absolutely crucial on the road to Brazil,” concluded Gallop
Qantas Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck is looking forward to playing this important 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier in Melbourne.
"The larger capacity of this stadium will allow us to have a big crowd to support our team for this match,” Osieck said.
