Qantas Socceroos to play Lebanon in friendly

The Qantas Socceroos are set to face the Lebanese National Football Team in an international friendly match at Sports City Stadium in Beirut on Thursday 6 September 2012.

Football Federation Australia and the Lebanese Football Association today announced that the Qantas Socceroos will meet the Lebanese National Football Team in an international friendly match at Sports City Stadium in Beirut on Thursday 6 September 2012 (kick-off 8:30pm EEST, 3:30am AEST).

This will be the first official match between Lebanon and Australia at senior men-s international level.

Qantas Socceroos head coach Holger Osieck will use the match to fine tune his players before their 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier match against Jordan in Amman on Tuesday 11 September 2012.

“This match against Lebanon will be an ideal opportunity for us to face quality opposition who play a similar style of football to our next opponents in the FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, Jordan.

“The other positive is that Beirut is in a similar region and time zone to Amman and the travel to Jordan following the match is short.

“We will definitely be using this match against Lebanon to test the level of our players before we meet Jordan,” concluded Osieck.

The Qantas Socceroos are currently ranked 23rd in the FIFA World Rankings whilst Lebanon are currently 144th (as of 4 July 2012).

The Qantas Socceroos are currently in third position of Group B with draws against Oman (0-0) and Japan (1-1) in their opening two matches of the final round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers whilst Lebanon are in fifth place of Group A after losses to Qatar (0-1) and Korea Republic (0-3) and a draw against Uzbekistan.

This match will be broadcast Live & Exclusive on FOX SPORTS.
