The Qantas Joeys (Australia U-17) claimed third place overnight at the eight-nation Lion City Cup Championship in Singapore with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

The Qantas Joeys (Australia U-17) claimed third place overnight at the eight-nation Lion City Cup Championship in Singapore with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

The Australian side scored two goals in the final six minutes through Trent Sainsbury and Kamal Ibrahim, after Nikola Stanojevic had opened the scoring in just the fifth minute.

Australia missed out on the final after losing 1-0 to the United Arab Emirates in the group stage. The other two group matches saw the Qantas Joeys record an 8-0 demolition of Chinese Taipei and a 1-0 win over host-nation Singapore.

Thailand won the tournament defeating the United Arab Emirates on penalties in the final with the match finishing 1-1.

The Qantas Joeys are building towards October's 2008 AFC U-16 Championship with the top four nations to represent Asia at next year's 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria.
