Roar re-sign experienced Westfield Matildas defender

Westfield Matildas defender Clare Polkinghorne says Brisbane Roar have unfinished business from last season and is eager to go all the way in 2018/19 after signing on for another Westfield W-League season with the club.

The inspirational skipper was confirmed as Roar's latest acquisition on Thursday afternoon.

Polkinghorne is one of the few remaining players from the inaugural Westfield W-League season and holds the record for most appearances in Roar colours.

After playing the recent NWSL season with Houston Dash in America, Polkinghorne returns home eager to help Roar build on last season's  Premiership.

“I’m excited to be part of the Brisbane Roar Football Club for another season," Polkinghorne said.

"I’m proud to represent the Roar and to play for this great club.

“We fell one step short of our goals last season and I’m excited for the opportunity to build on what we achieved last season.”

Polkinghorne

Polkinghorne will add to her record 115 Westfield W-League appearances when the Roar host the talented Perth Glory in Round 1.

Known for her leadership qualities both on and off the field, coach Mel Andreatta says having a player of Polkinghorne’s calibre is sure to bring both short & long-term benefits for the Roar Women.

“I’m delighted to have our captain and one of our key leaders back on board for season 11. Clare bleeds Orange,” Andreatta said.

“Polks is a player that our younger members learn from and all her teammates' respect and appreciate the important contribution she makes week in, week out.”

Polkinghorne is the latest on a list of players to sign on in Brisbane orange, including the likes of Katrina Gorry, Allira Toby and Jenna McCormick.

The new Westfield W-League season begins later this month, with Roar opening the campaign at home against Perth Glory at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, 28 October.
