Polkinghorne: Every session crucial on road to the World Cup

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup just two months away, Clare Polkinghorne says the Westfield Matildas are using every session to ensure they at their peak for the tournament in France.

Polkinghorne is one of a number of USA-based players who have begun to arrive in camp to prepare for Friday’s (AEDT) highly-anticipated clash against the USA.

“Anytime we get together now is really important,” Polkinghorne told www.matildas.com.au.

“It’s probably one of the final times we’ll be together before the final squad is together for the World Cup.

“Every session is going to be really important for us to get used to the style of play we want to play and just fine-tune parts of the game we need to improve.”

The early signs under new boss Ante Milicic were quite strong at the recent Cup of Nations, with the Westfield Matildas playing some thrilling attacking football to win all three of their matches.

But the challenge is sure to go to another level against the number one ranked and defending world champions USA.

The clash – at Dick’s Sporting Goods Stadium – will be the first time the Westfield Matildas will step-out in their new playing kit, designed specifically for the team ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“I think it’s awesome. It’s a good representation of our team and the character and personality and boldness this team has.” Polkinghorne said.
