The football world has been quick to pay tribute to Westfield Matildas superstar Sam Kerr after she was named the AFC Women’s Player of the Year overnight.
The 24-year-old was crowned the best player in Asia at an awards ceremony in Bangkok on Wednesday night (AEDT), edging out Japan’s Saki Kumagai and DPR Korea’s Sung Hyang.
Reflecting on the accolade, a humble Kerr thanked her teammates following an incredible 12 months for the Matildas and Perth Glory.
“Firstly I'd like to say congratulations to the other two nominees, it has been a great year, Kerr said at the AFC Awards.
“Secondly, thank you AFC for this wonderful night, it has been a bit of a crazy year, but I just want to say thank you to the support staff that helped me throughout the year and most importantly to my teammates because without them, none of this would have been possible, so thank you."
Kerr is the fourth Aussie to win the award, joining Caitlin Foord, Katrina Gorry and Kate Gill on the list of recipients.
Following the honour, a host of Matildas, Caltex Socceroos, ex-players, media personalities and fans lauded the striker’s fabulous achievement.
