NWSL wrap: Kerr scores in all-Aussie clash

Westfield Matildas superstar Sam Kerr got her name on the scoresheet as Chicago Reds Stars played out a 2-2 draw with Kyah Simon’s Houston Dash in the NWSL on Sunday (AEST).

Houston grabbed an early lead through Rachel Daly before Kerr equalised midway through the first half after capitalizing on a horror defensive error.

Arin Gilliland pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box before squaring the ball to Kerr who finished into an empty net.

It was Kerr’s second goal in as many games after also netting in last week’s 1-1 draw with North Carolina.

The Dash went ahead again just after half-time with a well-worked free-kick allowing Simon to tee-up teammate Kristen Mewis to make it 2-1.

But a penalty to Chicago’s Sofia Huerta midway through the second half levelled proceedings at 2-2.

The draw leaves the Reds Stars in fourth spot while Houston are in seventh after eight matches.

Elsewhere, Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond both saw game-time as Orlando Pride defeated Ellie Carpenter’s Portland Thorns 2-1 away from home.

Kennedy played the full 90 minutes for the visitors while van Egmond came on in the 64th minute.

Carpenter managed 82 minutes for the hosts before being substituted as her side chased a late equaliser.

In Seattle, Lydia Williams and Steph Catley both played full matches for Reign as they secured a 4-1 win over Sky Blue FC.

Catley provided the assist for Seattle’s opening goal, allowing Jodie Taylor to net in just the fifth minute.

Released down the left, Catley whipped in a delightful cross which Taylor buried from close range.

The win keeps the Reign in second spot on the NWSL table.
