New kit to drive Westfield Matildas to Asian Cup glory: Foord

Caitlin Foord is confident the new Westfield Matildas playing kit will help the team “ride the wave of momentum” all the way to winning the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Unavailable for the tournament in Jordan due to injury, Foord was on hand to model the new strip in Sydney on Thursday night.

“I really like it. I like the colour of it and the feel,” the 23-year-old told

“I think the sleeves are very funky and it reminds me of the sea and with Australia behind us at the moment we’re riding that wave, it’s definitely fitting for us.”

Foord admits she will be a “little jealous” watching the Westfield Matildas at the Asian Cup, which begins with a clash against the Korea Republic this weekend.

Despite a fourth-place finish at the recent Algarve Cup, Foord feels Alen Stajcic’s side are primed to go all the way in Jordan.

“With the build-up and the preparation we’ve had, the feeling around the team is very exciting and the girls are just itching to get out on the field now to show what they can do,” she said.

“And a little bonus of putting a new shirt on is very exciting as well so I can’t wait to watch them.”

The tournament doubles as qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the Westfield Matildas needing to finish in the top five in Jordan to make it.

“I’ve been to two World Cups already, it’s an amazing experience,” Foord said.

“Looking back at that Germany World Cup, it’s my favourite tournament to date. Europe really put on a good World Cup and France will be the best one yet.

“If we can do the job at the Asian Cup it will give us a taste of what being champions really feels like.

“The ultimate goal is to win the World Cup.”

Foord said her injury recovery is on track and she hopes to be back training in June and available for the Westfield Matildas title defence at the Tournament of Nations in July.
