More Kerr magic leads to NWSL Player of the Week award

Westfield Matildas captain Sam Kerr continues to light-up the National Women’s Soccer League as has again been voted as the competition’s Player of the Week.

Kerr earned the award for another outstanding display in Chicago Red Stars’ 2-1 win over defending champions North Carolina Courage on the weekend.

In front of more than 17,000 fans in Chicago, Kerr scored her 10th goal of the campaign as she showcased all her talent in the 56th-minute match-winning goal.

Receiving a pass from teammate Katie Johnson, Kerr flicked the ball back through the legs of Courage and New Zealand stalwart Abby Erceg with the outside of her right foot, before taking a touch and finishing underneath ‘keeper Stephanie Labbe.

The win moves the Red Stars into third place on the NWSL ladder, two points below North Carolina in second, and three away from leaders Portland Thorns.

Kerr, who has won the last two NWSL Golden Boot awards, is currently three goals clear at the top of the standings, despite missing almost a month of the campaign away at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

It’s the fourth time Kerr has taken out the Player of the Week award this season, while she also made the NWSL Team of the Month in May.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.

Kerr’s Red Stars are next in action on Monday morning against Reign FC, kicking off at 6am AEST.
