Mini Matildas dazzle against Vietnam

The Mini Matildas have opened their campaign in Malaysia with a convincing 6-0 win against Vietnam as they look to book a spot in next year's AFC U-16 Championships.

First half braces from Melina Ayres and Panagiota Petratos had the Westfield Women's U-17 national side in total control of the match, with Adriana Taranto and Grace Maher also finding the back of the net in the comprehnsive victory.

The Mini Matildas adopted an attacking style from the outset and it didn't take long for their 4-3-3 formation to find a way through Vietanm's defence. Some good build up play being finished with a superb long-range strike from Adriana Taranto to open the scoring on six minutes.

The side were on the attack again shortly after with Princess Ibini making a darting run down the flank and whipping in a perfectly weighted cross that was finished by Petratos.

Melina Ayres was next to find her name on the scoresheet after she was played through on goal by Alexandra Chidiac and slotted the ball past the keeper.

It took just three minutes for Ayres to register her double, showing some delightful skill in weaving past defenders and unleashing a powerful right-footed strike that rocketed into the back of the net.

The Victorian turned provider shortly after with another incisive run before setting up Petratos who made no mistake with the finish ensuring the Mini Matildas were 5-0 up inside 30 minutes.

That completed the first half scoring and the Mini Matildas found themselves up against a more resolute defence from Vietnam in the second stanza.

It took until the 90th minute for the side to add to their tally but it was certainly worth waiting for, Maher dribbling past three players and firing home to put an exclamation point on a dominant display.

The Mini Matildas will next play Hong Kong, followed by Korea Republic and will need to top their group in order to qualify for the AFC U-16 Championship 2015.
