Qantas Socceroo Scott McDonald has ended the season on the highest possible note, after Celtic were crowned Scottish Premier League (SPL) champions for the third successive time.

On a day of high drama in the final round, which saw Celtic and arch rival Rangers level on points, Celtic clinched the title with a hard fought 1-0 win over Dundee United.

Rangers who needed to win by a big margin to eclipse Celtic if both had won their final games, went down 2-0 at Aberdeen, after looking certainties for the title about a month ago.

McDonald, who was the standout goalscorer, not just for Celtic but in the SPL, this season, was kept quiet in the match, with Celtic-s winner coming from striking partner Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in the 71st minute. The Dutchmen headed home a Paul Hartley corner.

McDonald ended the season with 31 goals in all competitions, including 25 in the SPL and is in line for the Scottish Player of the Year.

He is set to join the Australian squad at some stage next week for the start of the World Cup qualifiers, with his Verbeek looking to the Victorian to continue his form in front of goals for his country.

McDonald joined Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven) and Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel), as Champions in their respective leagues.
