Matildas quarter final showdown with Brazil live on SBS

The Matildas quarter final showdown agaisnt Brazil at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Tianjin, China, will be broadcast live on SBS from 9.50pm (AEST).

Scoring the crucial last minute equalising goal against Canada, Australian captain, Cheryl Salisbury, catapulted the Matildas into the history books and the 2007 FIFA Women-s World Cup quarter finals.

Peaking with an audience of 533,000* SBS viewers, last night-s tense final group contest saw Canada come out strong and score in the opening seconds of the match. Their tight defence kept the pressure on Australia who remained scoreless until the 53rd minute when the tenacious Matildas replied to equal the score at one apiece. With only seven minutes left in the match a goal by Canada-s captain took the side into the lead with victory and a berth in the quarter finals within their grasp. But a cool and experienced Salisbury thwarted the Canadians- plan and in spectacular style scored with only seconds left on the clock to equal the score 2:2 and claim the Matildas- ticket into the next stage of competition.

Scheduled to make their quarter finals debut on Sunday, the Matildas have progressed into the knockout stage of the FIFA Women-s World Cup where they will meet the eighth ranked Brazil. The South American side boasts FIFA-s 2006 Women-s World Player of the Year, Marta, among their forwards and the talented footballer has already made her mark on the World Cup scoring four of Brazil-s 10 goals in their group stage campaign.

"It's been a dream run. Getting to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup is one of the finest achievements in the history of Australian football," said SBS-s Andrew Orsatti, host of ‘The World Game-.

"Beating Brazil will take the kind of performance that pushed Norway all the way in Australia's second group match," said Mr Orsatti. "The South Americans are blessed with an array of attacking talent. The Matildas will need to remain composed under pressure and alert in defence, to get past this hurdle.”

"Brazil has not yet conceded a single goal at this World Cup, but with Sarah Walsh and supersub Lisa De Vanna terrorising defences with their pace, ably supported by crafty midfielder Collette McCallum, Australia has enough class and firepower to find a way through.”

SBS will broadcast the quarter final match between Brazil and Australia LIVE on Sunday 23 September from 9.50pm (AEST), kick-off at 10:00.

"Football Federation Australia is delighted that so many Australians are following the Matildas efforts in the FIFA Women's World Cup," said Mr Ben Buckley, FFA CEO.

"The performances are truly inspiring and we know there will be a massive audience watching on SBS when they play Brazil in the quarter finals."
