Matildas Abroad Review: Women’s Champions League

The UEFA Women's Champions League Round of 32 concluded overnight for the Westfield Matildas with the completion of the second legs.

Olympique Lyonnais and Atletico Madrid both secured a place in the Round of 16 after winning their respective matches.

The second leg saw Olympique Lyonnais beat Juventus 3-0 (6-2 aggregate). The Lyons can now claim 24 wins out of 24 in the 12 seasons of the round of 32. Ellie Carpenter played the full match, with goals for Dzsenifer Marozsan, Melvine Malard and Janice Cayman.


Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid beat Servette 5-0 (9-2 on aggregate). Alex Chidiac was an unused substitute for Atletico.

Amy Harrison and Kyah Simon’s PSV took on Barcelona with the Catalans inflicting a  4-1 (8 - 2 aggregate) defeat.  Harrison played 55 minutes while Simon was an unused substitute as the first time Champions League participants bowed out of the tournament.

Meanwhile Karly Roestbakken will have an opportunity to make her Champions League debut after LSK won through 2-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 second loss.   

Sam Kerr continued her fantastic run of form with Chelsea FC as the Westfield Matildas captain netted her first Champions League goal against Benfica.  The Blues marked a successful return to the competition with a 3-0 home win and 8-0 aggregate victory. 

 

The round of 16 draw is on the 16th February, with ties scheduled for 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th of March.
