Matildas Abroad Review: Gielnik in the goals, Toppserien goes down to the wire

Emily Gielnik made a statement in Sweden, the Norwegian Toppserien is coming to a nail-biting finale, and some hectic games were played in the FA Women’s Super League.

England

Alanna Kennedy and Tottenham started at defensive midfield playing 64 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Reading FC.

Chelsea beat Everton 4-0 on the weekend to leapfrog the Toffees into third place. Hayley Raso started for the for the visitors before seeing out the match in the 79th minute.     

Manchester United came away with a 1-0 win against Arsenal thanks to an 83rd minute goal from Ella Toone. Caitlin Foord played full match as the Gunners dropped their first points of the league season and dropping to second place on the table. 

Chloe Logarzo’s Bristol City were deflated after an 8-1 loss to Manchester City. The match went ahead despite Bristol missing five of their first-team players due to COVID-19. Logarzo played the full match.

Emily Van Egmond scored the match winner via a header for her side West Ham United against Birmingham City on Sunday. The comeback goal was her third in consecutive games. Mackenzie Arnold played the full match. 

Netherlands

PSV Eindhoven came away with a 1-0 win against Ado Den Haag thanks to a last minute goal from Esmee Brugts in the Eredivisie. Amy Harrison started the match in the midfield before being substituted in the 60th minute.

Norway

Clare Polkinghorne and Avaldsnes kept their Toppserien title and Champions League hopes alive as they recorded a 3-0 win over Klepp.

Polkinghorne played the full 90 minutes for her side while Katrina Gorry was an unused substitute. With one round to go, Avaldsnes are sitting in third place on 34 points, while Valerenga and Rosenborg have 35 points each. If results go their way in round 18, Avaldsnes will still have the opportunity to win the Toppserien.

Karly Roestbakken was also on the bench for her side, with LSK Kvinner having a 1-1 draw with Kolbotn. A win next week will secure fourth place for Roestbakken and her team.

Spain

Atletico Madrid and Sporting Huelva were at a stalemate on Sunday, with the match resulting in a 0-0 draw – Alex Chidiac was on the bench for her side.

Aivi Luik and Sevilla took the three points away at Deportivo this week with a 2-1 win. Luik entered the field after 72 minutes to replace Carla Armengol Joaniquet in the midfield.

Sweden

Emily Gielnik was the star of the match on Sunday, involved in all four goals in Vittsjo’s 4-0 triumph over KIF Orebro DFF.


Gielnik netted a hattrick and recorded an assist in her 90 minutes, increasing her season goal tally to eight. 

Gielnik scored midway through the first half before netting her second and third only moments apart in the 82nd and 83rd minute.


Vittsjo are currently sitting in fifth place in the Damallsvenskan.
