Matildas Abroad Review: Gielnik bags a brace, Trophée Féminin action and Toppserien upset

Westfield Matildas Abroad weekend action saw vital wins in the Toppserien, Emily Gielnik netted her first goals for Vittjso while Ellie Carpenter picked up a first trophy with Lyon and more minutes for Kyah Simon, Amy Harrison and Mary Fowler.

Norway

Teagan Micah played 90 minutes for her side Arna-Bjørnar this week, winning 2-1 against Lyn in Round 7 of the Toppserien and jumping above them on the ladder.

 

Clare Polkinghorne and Katrina Gorry both started and recorded 90 minutes for Avaldsnes IL, who claimed a tight 1-0 win over Karly Røestbakken’s LSK Kvinner. Røestbakken also played the full game, though her side have dropped to second place after this defeat.

Sweden

Emily Gielnik’s Vittjsö played two games in four days, with the Aussie recording her first start last Thursday in a 2-0 loss to Göteborg before being substituted off just after the hour mark.

However, Gielnik impressed enough to earn her second start three days later, and returned the favour by bagging two goals of her own – her first goals in the Damallsvenskan – to secure a 2-0 win over Växjö and climb into 9th on the ladder after Round 11.

Netherlands

Kyah Simon and Amy Harrison’s PSV Eindhoven took on Mary Fowler’s Montpellier HSC this week in the Trophée Veoila Féminin friendly tournament. PSV clinched a 2-1 win, with an 89th minute goal the decider.

Harrison started the match in midfield, whilst youngster Mary Fowler was substituted into the game for Montpellier in the 62nd minute. Within a minute of entering the field, Fowler turned in the box and crossed the ball, with the deflection resulting in Montpellier’s only goal of the game.

France

Ellie Carpenter made her debut this week for Olympique Lyonnais in the first game of the same Trophée Veoila Féminin tournament, notching her first assist in a 4-0 win over PSV.

On Sunday morning, Carpenter and Olympique Lyonnais recorded a 3-0 win over Juventus, coming away from the competition as trophy winners less than a week after claiming the Coupe de France Féminine title.
