Matildas Abroad Review: Carpenter and Kerr claim trophies, Gielnik keeps scoring streak

There was a historic achievement for one Aussie in San Sebastián, and she wasn’t the only Westfield Matilda to win a trophy. Elsewhere, Emily Gielnik continued her goalscoring form in the Swedish Damallsvenskan, and Katrina Gorry also hit the back of the net in Norway.

France

Ellie Carpenter is the first Australian to earn a UEFA Women’s Champions League winner’s medal. The three time Westfield W-League Young Footballer of the Year was part of the Olympique Lyonnais squad which defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 on Sunday to win their fifth consecutive Champions League title (and seventh overall).

Mary Fowler’s Montpellier HSC defeated German side Hoffenheim 3-2 in a preseason friendly. Their opening Division 1 Féminine match is against FC Fleury 91, a game which could see Fowler go head-to-head with Emma Checker.

England

It’s another title for Sam Kerr and Chelsea FC.  Kerr started and played 72 minutes as Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-0 to win the FA Community Shield. Chelsea begin their FA WSL championship defence on Sunday when they travel to Manchester United.

Chelsea weren’t the only London club with big Westfield Matildas related news, as West Ham United announced the loan signing of Emily Van Egmond from Orlando Pride.

Van Egmond, who is closing in on a century of Westfield Matildas caps, joins Mackenzie Arnold at the Hammers.

West Ham’s opening FA WSL fixture is against Alanna Kennedy’s Tottenham Hotspur. The Westfield Matildas defender was pictured on the weekend training with her new teammates.

Hayley Raso started in Everton FC’s 5-0 preseason win over FA Women’s Championship (second division) side Durham FC. Raso will meet another Westfield Matilda in Everton’s first league match of the season, with the Blues traveling south to take on Chloe Logarzo’s Bristol City.

Steph Catley & Caitlin Foord were in front of the Arsenal FC photographers. Those two, along with Lydia Williams, will start their league campaign with a home game against Reading FC.

Sweden

Emily Gielnik now has four goals in her last three appearances for Vittsjö. The Westfield Matildas forward came off the bench with half an hour remaining and scored Vittsjö’s third goal in a 3-1 victory over Vaxjö.

Norway

Karly Roestbakken caught the eye on the weekend, putting in a sterling defensive performance which saw the Westfield Matilda named in the Toppserien Team of the Week.

Her LSK Kvinner side defeated Sandviken 1-0 away from home and are now only two points behind league leaders Vålerenga with a game in hand.

Katrina Gorry scored as Avaldsnes won 4-0 over Røa Dynamite Girls. Fellow Westfield Matilda Clare Polkinghorne was also in action, playing another full game to help their team jump into the top four.

Teagan Micah’s Arna-Bjørnar did well to draw 1-1 away from home against high-flying Rosenborg, with Micah playing the full 90 minutes. More results like this will help the Bergen side move away from the foot of the table.

Spain

Jenna McCormick is getting plenty of attention from Real Betis. The Westfield Matildas defender featured in a publicity shoot with teammate and Spain international player Rosa Márquez.
