Matildas Abroad Preview: Action continues in England, France and Spain

The FAWSL is heating up as we head into Round 9, while some exciting games are on the cards in the French Division 1 Feminine and Spanish Primera Division. Read below to see what matches are lined up for our Matildas Abroad this week.

England

Alanna Kennedy’s Tottenham Hotspur recorded their first win of the season last week over Brighton. This week Kennedy’s side will take on Aston Villa (Monday, 1:00am AEST)as they look to build some momentum under their new head coach.  

Hayley Raso and fifth-placed Everton will play Birmingham this week, hoping to redeem themselves after a 3-0 loss last week to Manchester City (Monday 1:00am AEST).

Mackenzie Arnold and Emily van Egmond will also play on Monday at 1:00am AEST, with their side West Ham United taking on bottom of the table Bristol City. West Ham will be looking to claim their second win of the season.


Sam Kerr’s Chelsea will take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday (1:00am AEST). After last week’s hattrick - placing her in third in the Golden Boot race - Kerr will be looking to add to her tally if she is able to overcome a slight knock.  

Meanwhile Arsenal’s Lydia Williams, Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley will play Manchester City away from home on Monday (1:30am AEST).  


With Arsenal in second place and City in fourth, it’ll be a game you don’t want to miss as both teams look to keep the pressure on ladder leaders

France

Fresh off her UEFA Women’s Champions League debut, Ellie Carpenter and second-placed Olympique Lyonnais will play Issy FF this Sunday (12:30am AEST). After a stellar Player of the Match performance last week, Carpenter will be looking to secure her team the three points, and keep pace with PSG.    

Montpellier and Mary Fowler take on Bordeaux this week on Sunday at 1:15am AEST. It’s a third vs fourth play-off with Fowler’s side able to leapfrog if they claim the three points.


Spain

Sevilla FC and Aivi Luik play Sociedad on Monday at 2:15am AEST. While Sociedad are sitting just outside the top four, Sevilla will be looking to take home the three points to they can leap Athletic Club into ninth place.

Alex Chidiac and Atletico Madrid will take on Madrid CFF on Sunday (10:00pm AEST). Chidiac will be hoping to get some game time this week as Atletico work hard to remain in the top four.
