Massive win for Westfield Under 16 Women's team

The Australian U16 women's team have commenced their qualification phase for the Championships in 2009 in style with a 0-17 defeat of Singapore.

The Australian U16 women's team have commenced their qualification phase for the Championships in 2009 in style with a 17-0 defeat of Singapore.

The first 20 minutes of play saw Australia score seven goals, including a hat trick for Caitlin Foord. Before the break, the Westfield U16 Women had notched up a further three goals, leaving the score at 10-0.

The second half again belonged to Australia with Foord finishing as the leading goal scorer with a total of six goals to her name by full time. Mikaela Hatzirodos and Ruth Wallace each scored hat tricks, while the Australian defence ensured a clean sheet to begin the qualification.

With the warm humid conditions, the Westfield U16 Women showed stamina and determination which they will take with them into their next match against Myanmar on Monday.

Coach Gary Phillips was extremely happy with the poerformance, given for many of them it was their first taste of international football.

"Given there are so many young players and many debuts, I was very pleased with the performance.

"We did well getting used to the conditions - the heat and humidity - and we got no injuries, no yellow cards.

"Good start to the championship - looking forward to next game on monday against Myanmar," he added.
