Luik signs for Melbourne City

Three-time Westfield W-League Champion, Aivi Luik, has returned to Melbourne City.

The 12-cap Westfield Matilda, Luik, signed for her former club alongside experienced New Zealand international, Rebekah Stott, after they both had been playing for Avaldsnes IL in the Norwegian Toppserien.

After the European league came to a conclusion last weekend, the duo rejoined head coach Rado Vidosic’s side ahead of City’s Round 2 clash against Canberra United at McKellar Park on Sunday, 24 November at 4pm AEDT.

Luik has played 76 Westfield W-League matches but made the move to Europe in 2018/19, turning out 26 times for Levante in the Spanish Primera División Femenina, before going on to play in Norway.

The midfielder was crowned Westfield W-League Player of the Year in 2015/16 as an undefeated City clinched a Premiership-Championship double in their debut season in the competition.

The 34-year-old started in the Westfield Matildas’ 2-1 win against Chile in Sydney 11 days ago and is excited to be returning ‘home’ to Victoria.

"I'm really happy to be returning to play with Melbourne City for the upcoming 2019/20 W-league season,” said Luik, who won three straight championships with City between 2015 and 2018.

“It's a club I called home for three seasons before playing in Spain last year and in its short history, has won many titles and championships.

“I’m hungry for more of that success and with the same hard work, dedication, high standards and a good group of people, we will have a very good chance of creating more history.”
