Luik joins Mata and Morgan by giving back with Common Goal

Westfield Matildas midfielder Aivi Luik has joined a global movement of famous footballers by deciding to commit to the Common Goal initiative.

The not-for-profit organisation, which sees famous footballers and those related to the game donate 1% of their income to worthwhile causes, includes the likes of Juan Mata, Alex Morgan and Kasper Schmeichel.

Luik believed it was a ‘no-brainer’ to give back to those in need, considering the 'blessed' position she and her teammates find themselves in as professional footballers.

“I’m joining Common Goal because for me it’s a really great organisation that helps give to others,” said Luik.

“I think we’re in a really blessed situation as footballers and we have the privilege of earning a good income.

“Our 1%, I feel almost anyone can give that, because there are a lot of other people in a lot greater need than ourselves, so for me it was a no-brainer.”

Interestingly, Levante midfielder Luik found out about the organisation through compatriot Alex Chidiac who also currently plies her trade in Spain with Atlético Madrid Femenino.

And alongside Sydney FC’s retiring captain Alex Brosque, they make up the Australian contingent of a global group of players dipping into their pockets to make a positive change.

Never too late to ‘dream’

Turning her attention to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™, Luik spoke of the excitement she felt at being called up to Ante Milicic’s squad.

Luik, aged 34, will be heading to her first ever global showpiece and was grateful for realising a dream she has harboured for more 25 years.

“It means everything to me,” said Luik.

“It means achieving a dream that I’ve dreamt for so long since I was nine-years-old.

“There have been a lot of years of hard work and sacrifice, so now that it’s come to fruition, it’s amazing to be here. It means a lot.”
