The Socceroos trained again at Kogarah today and after several sessions under new coach Ange Postecoglou, the competition for starting places only heating up further.

Perhaps the most hotly contested position is for the two men tasked with emerging from Mark Schwarzer-s formidable shadow.

“Schwarzy-s definitely a good example for all of us to follow, not only was he a fantastic ‘keeper, a good guy around the squad, he was a leader,” said Mitch Langerak, who has enjoyed a solid start to his domestic season with German giant Borussia Dortmund.

“We-ve definitely learned a lot, he-s rubbed off onto us and hopefully we can follow in his footsteps.”

Langerak-s rival for the Socceroos number one jersey also paid respect to Schwarzer-s contribution to Australian football.

“He-s made that spot his own for the last decade or so and rightly so,” said Mat Ryan.

“We didn-t start thinking ahead to the World Cup and the possibility of not only being involved in the squad but playing at a World Cup.

“There-s a long period to go before then and we-ve just got to stay grounded and keep focused on the present and work hard during our time here.”

In other news, Mile Jedinak took away the top individual prize from last night-s Australian Football Awards, the Crystal Palace midfielder suitably recognised for his stellar period for club and country.

“Obviously it-s a huge honour and a privledge to receive such an accolade,” said Jedinak.

“To be be recognised amongst all of your peers and Australian football, for the year that I had, is very special to me.”
