Friendships on hold for Sam Kerr during USA clash

There will be no love lost between Sam Kerr and her Chicago Red Stars teammates when the Westfield Matildas tackle the USA on Friday, according to the Australia captain.

Kerr, who clinched the National Women’s Soccer League Golden Boot in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, could face up against fellow Red Stars Tierna Davidson, Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher and Casey Short when the action gets underway at 12.30pm AEDT.

The 25-year-old says any club friendships will be put on hold when the whistle blows at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado.

“In the change room at Chicago there was a bit of banter going on, but come tomorrow there are no friends — and if there are, you kind of go harder on your friends than anyone else,” said Kerr.

“We both want to win, I’m sure it’s the same for all the girls in the [Australia] team and their team.

“But there’ll be no friends tomorrow when we cross that line.”

Rivalries aside, Kerr believes Friday’s friendly with the reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup holders is a great opportunity for the Westfield Matildas to test the brand of football they have been developing under Ante Milicic.

“The camp’s been really enjoyable,” Kerr said.

“[We’ve received] a lot of information — we haven’t had many sessions with Ante so [we are] taking on as much information as we can.

“Training has been really, really good and intense.”
