Junior Matildas' easy win in Vietnam

The Junior Matildas have claimed a convincing win over Palestine in their opening match at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Qualifiers in Vietnam.

Australia’s U-17 team ran out 28-0 winners in Hanoi, as they hope to book a spot at next year’s AFC U-16 Women’s Championship in China.

Courtney Nevin opened the scoring in the first minute in a match played in near 40°C heat and from there the Aussies were always in control, with the striker notching nine goals in total.

Sofia Sakalis bagged five goals and Kyra Cooney Cross four, while Karly Roestbakken, India Kubin, Gracie Johns, Amy Sayer and Georgia Iannella all got their names on the scoresheet.

Despite the lop-sided nature of the scoreline the Mini Matildas stuck to the game plan outlined by coach Ante Juric.

The Junior Matildas next play Hong Kong, with matches against Iraq, Vietnam and Uzbekistan to follow.

The Australians will need to top their Group D in order to join DPR Korea, Japan, Thailand and China at the 2017 Championships.
