How Australia reacted to Sam Kerr's Ballon d'Or effort

Westfield Matilda Sam Kerr may have finished fifth in the race for the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or, but it didn’t stop people praising her efforts.

The Ballon d'Or is an annual event hosted by France Football, but this was the first time in its 63-year history that the competition has had a Women's award.

Kerr had a sensational year for club and country, scoring over 30 goals overall, but it wasn't to be as Lyon and Norway forward Ada Hegerberg took out the honour.

Despite falling short at the Ballon d'Or, Kerr is currently equal-second in the Westfield W-League’s Golden Boot race, so she may just pick up in 2019 from where she left off this year.

We found the best reactions across Twitter.

The Aussie media showing nothing but praise and admiration for one of our brightest Westfield Matildas.

But of course the game is nothing without our fans.
