Greatest Socceroos moments in Australia - Skoko strikes

Greece may have come to the MCG as Champions of Europe, but they couldn't match an attacking Australia outfit.

Surprise champions of Europe, Greece came to visit our shores in 2006, riding high on their shock triumph at the recent Euros, but a shock of a different kind was in store for them on May 25 at the MCG.

Guus Hiddink-s Qantas Socceroos, the second-lowest ranked team to enter that year-s World Cup Finals in Germany were on the march and ready to tackle all comers, and when Greece got in the way, well, Australia brought an early onslaught.

Thanks in part to Melbourne-s large and fiercely proud Greek community the match sold out in just under two hours, with tickets being snapped up quickly, and despite a strong Hellenic flavour at the ground, it was the Socceroos who were to provide the Greeks with a headache akin to one that too much Ouzo would provide.

From the get-go the Socceroos went on the attack and pressed the Greek penalty area and it wasn-t long until Josip Skoko hit a wunderstrike from the edge of the area to leave Greek keeper Antonis Nikopolidis completely stranded as he watched the ball sail into the top right corner of his goal.

From there the Socceroos continued to press a hopelessly outclassed Greek side, who had no answer but to defend doggedly.

The match was to be the last on Australian soil before the team left for the World Cup in Germany, where they would ultimately lose 1-0 to Italy in the Round of 16, after losing to Brazil, drawing with Croatia and beating Japan in the group stage.
