Culina's season over

The Newcastle Jets have been rocked by the news that marquee signing Jason Culina will miss the entire 2011/12 Hyundai A-League Season due to a knee injury.

Culina underwent major knee surgery during the off-season and was on the verge of a much-anticipated return several weeks ago before pulling up with pain in his knee.

The initial reports said Culina would be sidelined for four to six weeks but the Jets confirmed on Tuesdy afternoon that their star midfielder requires season-ending osteotomy surgery.

The 31-year-old said he was 'frustrated' with the setback.

"In consultation with the Club, I have made this decision to have the operation as soon as possible to ensure I will be fit and ready for the 2012/13 season," Culina said.

"Whilst I feel frustrated to sit out the season I have nothing but confidence in how the team are playing and the young talent coming through will ensure the Jets have a great season."

"I am really loving my time in Newcastle and thank all those that have sent me best wishes to get back on the paddock and to my teammates who will do Newcastle proud this year."

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said, at this stage the club would not look to sign a marquee player in Culina's absence.

"We will not be adding to our squad in the short term but be relying on our strategy of developing and promoting home grown products to give them a chance to shine in the Hyundai A-League," Middleby said.

"This policy has already been showing dividends with development of exciting new players like James Virgilli, Jacob Pepper and Taylor Regan who are undefeated after 10 trial games."

Culina will undergo surgery next week.
