CommBank Matildas gear up for Asian Cup test

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas now know their opponents for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022.

The tournament, which is set to get underway on January 20 in India, will be the team's second major tournament in as many years and another major stop on the journey to 2023.

Now boasting 12 teams and a Quarter Finals stage, this expanded competition is set to be a great test for Tony Gustavsson's team.

Since officially joining Asia in 2006, the Commonwealth Bank Matildas have enjoyed competing in the continent's biggest tournament.

India 2022 will be the team's sixth AFC Women's Asian Cup with the 2010 victory being the high point of Australia's history at the tournament.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas have never finished lower than fourth place at the competition and have made the final in four of their five campaigns.

It is a record the team will look to keep as it gears up for an exciting tournament.

While the Commonwealth Bank Matildas have avoided the likes of two-time reigning champions Japan, South Korea, and China in the group stage, Group B comes with its own unique narratives.

The campaign begins in Mumbai against Indonesia; a team Australia has never met before. The team currently ranked 96 in the world is returning to the continental competition for the first time since 1989.

It booked its ticket to India after defeating Singapore 1-0 in the two qualification games played.

Attentions will then turn to the Philippines in Navi Mumbai. The Malditas will be at their 10th AFC Women's Asian Cup after defeating Hong Kong and Nepal in qualifying.

Australia and the Philippines have only met once before, at the ASEAN Championship in 2008. The Commonwealth Bank Matildas were 7-0 winners on that day.

There will be a familiar face in the opposition dugout with former head coach Alen Stajcic taking the reins of the Philippines in October 2021.

Australia's final group game will see the team do battle with Thailand.

Into their ninth straight AFC Women's Asian Cup, Thailand defeated Palestine and Malaysia on their way to India.

The Thai team is the one the Commonwealth Bank Matildas are most familiar with having met seven times. Australia has won six games with the remaining fixture a draw.

In recent times, Australia has defeated Thailand in a friendly before the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup and in the 2020 Olympic qualifiers. But their most fascinating battle came at the tournament proper in 2018.

The sides met in the semi-final with Alanna Kennedy's injury-time header helping take the game to penalties. Mackenzie Arnold was enormous in the shootout and Australia progressed to the final.

The top two teams from Group A, B, and C progress to the knockout stages as well as the two best-ranked third-place teams.

The AFC Women's Asian Cup doubles as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women's World Cup. Australia, as co-hosts in 2023, automatically qualify for the pinnacle of women's football.

The top five finishers in India will book their ticket to Australia and New Zealand. If Australia finishes as part of the top five there are contingencies in place to determine which nation will feature in 2023.
