Qantas Socceroo midfielder Tim Cahill made a superb return to action for his EPL side Everton, with a goal in the side-s 3-1 win over Greek side Larissa in their UEFA Cup Group A match played at Goodison Park.

After a three-month spell on the sidelines after re-injuring his foot during the pre-season, Cahill scored Everton-s opener in the 14th minute, with a diving header and was the architect of the team-s second goal shortly after half time.

Meanwhile on the red of Merseyside, Harry Kewell also made his long awaited return from a groin injury, playing in a reserves match against Newcastle United, with the Australian midfielder also getting on the scoresheet in the 2-1 win.

However it was the return of Cahill that had England buzzing and left a big smile on the manager of Everton David Moyes.

After an early scare from Larissa, Cahill, in typical fashion, dived to meet a cross from Leon Osman, which flew into the back of the net.

Indeed, Cahill was involved in most of Everton-s best moments in the first half, teeing up James McFadden, who scuffed his shot and then blasting a shot from 20 metres that was turned away for a corner.

Cahill proved the main architect of the team-s second goal in the 50th minute, when his superb ball released Leighton Baines down the left and it ended with Osman finishing brilliantly from 25 metres.

Cahill was replaced after 65 minutes and was given a rousing reception by the Everton faithful.

Kewell was also impressive in his comeback match for Liverpool, scoring and looking lively in the opening 45 minutes of the match against Newcastle, who featured Australian Under 23 international James Troisi.

He had one effort from distance turned away by the keeper, but scored Liverpool-s first goal with a well-taken header. He was replaced at half time in a pre-planned move, but would have given Raphael Benitez plenty of encouragement with his bright return to the park.

Meanwhile, Australia-s only other representative in action in the UEFA Cup Scott Chipperfield, played a full game in FC Basel-s 1-0 win over Rennes.
