Cahill to Everton's rescue again

Qantas Socceroo midfielder Tim Cahill continues to show no ill-effects from the hectic off-season at the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany, after scoring his fourth goal of the season in Everton-s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday.

Cahill rose superbly at the back post to head home Mikel Arteta-s cross and level the game up, after Newcastle had earlier scored a highly contentious goal from Shola Ameobi-s.

The draw kept Everton-s unbeaten start to the season intact and sit in fourth position.

Newcastle took the lead through Ameobi, who looked well offside when he received a free kick from Emre. However Everton scored their deserved equaliser just before half time, with Cahill rising between his Qantas Socceroo team mate Craig Moore and Titus Bramble, who was later sent off.

On Saturday, it was a battle of the Aussies at Riverside Stadium, as Middlesbrough battled Blackburn, with the visitors emerging on top.

Mark Schwarzer was again between the sticks for Boro and had a good game, while Mark Viduka came off the bench and almost stole an equaliser at the end. Lucas Neill and Brett Emerton both played full games for Blackburn.

In Italy, Marco Bresciano was replaced at half time, as Palermo lost 2-0 away at Empoli. The loss saw Palermo drop off top spot.

Meanwhile, Bresciano-s former club Parma continue to struggle towards the foot of the table after being thrashed 4-0 at home by Roma. Vince Grella was replaced after 65 minutes.

Michael Beauchamp made his debut for Nurnberg in Germany, coming on as a late substitute in their 1-1 draw away at Energie Cottbus. The draw also saw them lose top spot, overtaken by Bayern Munich.

In Holland, Brett Holman came off the bench at half time, as NEC Nijmegen lost 2-0 away at Ajax Amsterdam.
