Qantas Socceroo Marco Bresciano began life at his new club US Palermo in the best possible fashion, scoring their opening goal in a 4-3 win at home against Reggina. That followed on from Tim Cahill-s history making effort for Everton in their 3-0 win over arch rival Liverpool.

Bresciano gave Palermo fans a taste of what is to come this season, scoring after just 11 minutes with a magnificent bicycle kick. Palermo went onto win 4-3, but made hard work of it against a brave Reggina side, who is starting the season with a -15 points deficit because of their involvement in the Italian match-fixing scandal.

The midfielder-s effort narrowly overshadowed that of his World Cup team mate Cahill, who scored in his third consecutive derby match between the two Merseyside rivals. Cahill opened the scoring midway through the half, shooting low and hard past Reina in the Liverpool goal from close range.

Lucas Neill was again in the thick of the action for Blackburn Rovers, missing a penalty and then again being on the wrong end of another late and contentious penalty, although this time his blushes were saved with Brad Friedel saving his second spot kick of the match. The game finished 0-0 with Brett Emerton also playing a full game for Rovers.

Another Australian on fire in England was goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who was only beaten by a late penalty by Thierry Henry at Arsenal-s Emirates Stadium. Schwarzer continually defied the Arsenal attack, after his team had taken an early lead.

Craig Moore played a full game, as Newcastle United threw away three points, conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes against Fulham.

Scott McDonald got himself on the scoresheet for Motherwell, but it was to be a miserable day for his team who went down 4-1 at home against Inverness CT and left them on the bottom of the table.

Also in Scotland, midfielder Danny Invincibile got Kilmarnock off to a great start with a goal after 9 minutes, but it was also not enough as Dunfermline came back to win 3-2.

Back in Italy, Vince Grella played a full game for Parma in its 1-1 draw away at Torino, while in Holland, Brett Holman played a full game for NEC Nijmegen (lost 2-0 to AZ Alkmaar), while Jason Culina overcame his injury that forced him to withdraw from last Wednesday-s international against Kuwait, to come off the bench and help PSV to a 3-1 win over Willem II Tilburg.
