Best performing Westfield Matildas in 2020

Given the time of year we thought it would be best to see how our Westfield Matildas performed throughout 2020.

There are plenty of positive to report on across the board for the Westfield Matildas in 2020 with a raft of Aussies flying the flag across Europe.

Beginning with Emily Van Egmond has been a force to be reckoned with for the Westfield Matildas and has become one of the shining lights in West Ham United’s midfield since her move to East London.

The Novocastrian leads the way in Westfield Matildas assists with six from her five international matches, which is no surprise given her effectiveness in the final third.

She finished top in terms of chances created by a fair margin with 22 to her name, while her nearest rival managed to create just 13.

Her consistent performances at club level have also not gone unnoticed with the 27-year-old having recorded three goals and one assist for the Hammers so far this season, as well as being involved in the most aerial duals out of any WSL player (33).

Van Egmond's Westfield Matildas roommate and captain Sam Kerr has also had a goal-filled 2020.  The forward has bagged an impressive eight goals from her seven matches with Chelsea in the Women’s Super League 2020/21 Season so far.

In terms of national team involvement, Kerr took the joint most headed shots throughout the Olympics Qualifiers with six efforts while she averaged the most carry distance with 13.3 metres throughout the five matches she featured in.

Her efficiency in front goal at club level is backed up by a raft of statistics which place her top in terms of shot conversation rate with 26.9% - 1.3% better off than Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema (the league’s top goal scorer).

The lethal forward also tops the category in big chances scored (7), two ahead of her Arsenal counterpart as well as fellow Westfield Matilda Caitlin Foord.

It proved to be another year to remember for Foord who has become one of the first names on the team sheet for the high-flying Gunners.

She currently stands in joint-second on the WSL assists leaderboard with five assists to her name, while she has also struck the back of the net on five occasions.

Foord has been able to carry that form into the national set up with a standout 26 shots throughout the OIympic Qualifiers while also contesting in the most duels (61), as well completing the most dribbles with 15.

It has been a record-breaking year for Hayley Raso after she became the first Australian woman to play in a Women’s FA Cup Final at the new Wembley Stadium for Everton at the beginning of November.

The Everton striker has weighed in with two goals for her club in her eight WSL appearances this season while she had the best shot conversion rate out of any player in the Olympic Qualifiers with 27.3%.

Moving onto French-based Ellie Carpenter who wrote her name into the history books when she became the first Australian woman to win a UEFA Champions League medal with Olympique Lyonnais earlier this year.


The defender has been able to transfer her dominant club displays over to the Westfield Matildas with a hat-trick of assists registered from her four international appearances in 2020.

Westfield Matildas and Arsenal shot stopper Lydia Williams was once again a rock between the sticks throughout 2020.

In her four matches for the Westfield Matildas, Williams picked up two clean sheets and had the second best save percentage with 83.3%.
