Aussies Abroad Preview: Kerr's NWSL scoring record in touch this weekend

Sam Kerr is one goal away from inking her name into National Women's Soccer League history once more.

The Westfield Matildas star is one goal shy of equalling the 17 goals she scored for Sky Blue in 2017 - the most ever in a NWSL campaign.

Kerr, who plays for Chicago Red Stars, scored her 16th of the 2019 campaign in her side's 3-0 win over Sky Blue last Monday.

The 26-year-old stands a chance to equal that tally when Chicago welcome Washington Spirit on Sunday morning at 10:00am AEST, a match the Red Stars must win to keep their title hopes alive.

Chicago trail leaders North Carolina Courage by five points with just two matches of the campaign remaining, although reigning double winners Courage have a match in hand.

Westfield Matildas teammates Amy Harrison, Elise Kellond-Knight and Chloe Logarzo all stand in her way, and are also looking for three points to keep their Final series bid on course.

Washington are currently sixth ahead of kick off, six points away from fourth-placed Utah Royals, but with five matches left to play, and one in hand over the Royals and fifth-placed Reign FC.

Steph Catley and Reign FC are firmly in the hunt for finals football, but they can ill afford to drop points at home to Sky Blue on Sunday, 12:00pm kick off.

Seattle-based Reign are level on points with Utah Royals, who occupy the fourth and final playoffs position.

Utah are in action against North Carolina at 11:00am on Sunday, meaning Catley's side could well finish the match day inside the four should the Royals drop points against the ladder leaders.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Portland Thorns stars Hayley Raso, Ellie Carpenter and Caitlin Foord host Houston Dash at 12:30pm.

While still a mathematical chance at a title tilt - the Thorns are seven points off Courage with three fixtures to play - the more realistic ambition for Portland is to bolster their Final series spot with three points the visiting Houston, the team of Westfield Matildas forward Kyah Simon.

And in Europe...

Alex Chidiac picked up her first minutes of the Primera Division campaign in Atletico Madrid's 3-0 win over Sevilla last Sunday, and the Westfield Matilda is now gearing up for a heavyweight showdown against Barcelona.

The reigning league champions face the Catalans away from home at 12:00am on Sunday.

In Germany, Emily Gielnik's Bayern Munich face Sand at 10:00pm on Sunday evening.

Gielnik made her first league start in Bayern's 2-1 defeat to Leverkusen last time out.

Lisa De Vanna, meanwhile, is looking to make it two league wins from two for Fiorentina.

The Violets commenced their Serie A season with a 4-2 win over Florentina last Sunday, a match that saw the legendary Australian forward secure her first goal for the Italians with the last kick of the match.
