Aussies Abroad: Kerr's Red Stars beaten in NWSL final

Sam Kerr ended a superb National Women's Soccer League season with a 4-0 loss to North Carolina Courage in the Championship final.

Kerr had fired Chicago Red Stars into their maiden final on the back off an outstanding individual season, in which the Westfield Matildas captain won her third-straight Golden Boot and was voted NWSL MVP for the second time.

But the NWSL's all-time leading goal scorer could not halt league powerhouse Courage from sealing back-to-back Championship trophies in front of 10, 227 fans at a packed WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

After Brazilian Debinha broke the deadlock in the fourth minute - the fastest goal in NWSL Championship history - Jessica McDonald and Crystal Dunn stretched North Carolina's lead out to three goals at the break.

Sam Mewis then added a fourth on the hour mark to wrap up yet another dominant display from Paul Riley's side.

De Vanna, Gielnik and Galabadaarachchi in action

Lisa De Vanna shone for Fiorentina but her second-half cameo could not help The Violets avoid a 2-0 defeat to Juventus in the Italian Super Cup.

De Vanna was introduced with her side chasing an equaliser after Cristiana Girelli opened the scoring early on for Juventus.

Despite her impact, Andrea Staskova secured the victory for Juventus in the second minute of stoppage time.

"We had a different kind of attack in the first half without [Ilaria] Mauro or De Vanna, but then in the second half the subs gave us more physical strength," said coach Antonio Cincotta after the final whistle.

Meanwhile, Emily Gielnik made another start as Bayern Munich beat FF USV Jena 3-0.

Bayern are now third on the Bundesliga ladder.

Jacynta Galabadaarachchi started for West Ham United, who fell 3-1 to Chelsea in the Women's Super League.
