Chris Herd's Aston Villa have all but secured their spot in the English Premier League next season, after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

Villa were in danger of relegation to the Championship after a nightmare run of form, but the draw against Spurs at Villa Parki, means Bolton would have to beat Stoke in next weekend's last round of games and Villa lose to Norwich with a 17-goal swing in goal difference for Villa to go down.

The club's retention of Premier League status is also good news for Qantas Socceroo Brett Holman, who is set to move to the Midlands side in the European summer.

In other Premier League news, Mark Schwarzer's Fulham defeated a resurgent Sunderland 2-1 at Craven Cottage, a result which could yet see the Cottagers finish ahead of giants Liverpool.

And Tim Cahill's Everton were unable to get past a determined but already relegated Wolverhampton, in their 0-0 draw at Molineux.
