Tim Cahill has kept the New York Red Bulls' winning streak alive heading home the loan goal against Columbus in the 80th minute.

Cahill's header came after Columbus keeper Andy Gruenebaum made the initial save off a shot by Jonathan Steele, making it three wins straight for the Red Bulls who sit second in the MLS Eastern Conference behind Montreal.

Cahill's third goal in two matches came just seven minutes after Red Bulls keeper Luis Robles went to his right to stop Federico Higuain-s penalty after Columbus' Eddie Gaven was fouled by the Red Bulls' Brandon Barklage.

Cahill's heroics aside it wasn't a good night for many of the Socceroos with the club's European-based stars suffering some tough losses.

Mark Schwarzer's Fulham had a night to forget, thumped 4-2 by Adam Federici's relegated Reading side, though the Reading No1 was again sidelined through injury.

There was some joy for Brett Holman though, the Aussie midfielder came on as a substitute for Yacouba Sylla in the 79th minute as Villa took a 2-1 win over Norwich to move further away from the relegation zone.

In Germany Robbie Kruse's Fortuna Dusseldorf suffered a crushing 3-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Mitch Langerak warmed the bench for Borussia Dortmund as they drew 1-1 with fellow heavyweights Bayern Munich.
