All the numbers after the Matildas' draw with the USA

The Matildas have locked in a quarter-final date with Team GB after a scoreless draw with the United States.

Alex Morgan’s header was ruled offside and Mary Fowler’s effort clattered the crossbar, but neither side could get on the scoresheet.

The result ensured both teams progressed through the next stage of the tournament.

The draw represents another positive result for the Matildas against the two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champions. In their last four meetings, Australia has recorded two draws, a win, and a loss stretching back to 2017.

Prior to this run of matches, Australia lost 24 of 26 encounters with the United States.

The Matildas were strong in the statistical battle, dominating possession with 65% compared to the USA’s 35%.

Australia won more of their tackles, attempted more shots, and had nearly double the number of passes. The 83% accuracy rate is Australia’s highest in a single game at the Olympics

Alanna Kennedy was particularly integral in that passing stat. The centre back, who made her first start at these Games, made 156 pass attempts with 145 of them being successful. It’s the most of any single player in the last three Olympic Women’s Football Tournaments.

Alongside Kennedy, Mary Fowler and Chloe Logarzo also made their first starts of the tournament.

Logarzo, in her 50th appearance for the national team, was a workhorse in the centre of the park. Her 60-minute shift was full of running and grit.

Fowler, meanwhile, was a late inclusion into the starting XI but did not miss a beat, linking well with Kyah Simon and Sam Kerr up top.

Australia’s attention now turns to Friday night when it takes on Team GB for the first time ever in a major tournament.

Kick-off is at 7:00 pm AEST.
