Qualifying for AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 continues this week with Singapore hosting Oman and Syria tackling Jordan in Tehran. The two matches are the final games from Match Day 2 of qualifying, having been rescheduled from their original March dates to accommodate World Cup qualifiers.
AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 Local Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer Michael Brown said the two matches being held on opposite sides of Asia would showcase the continent-s diversity, both on and off the pitch.
“The Asian Football Confederation includes countries from Saudi Arabia in the west to Japan in the east,” Mr Brown said.
“There is amazing diversity in terms of the style of football as well as in the countries- cultures.
“We will see that this week with matches in Iran and Singapore and you will see it all on display here in Australia in January 2015. AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 will not only be a festival of football, it will be a showcase of the diversity and cultures that exist throughout Asia.”
Match Day 3 of qualifying will occur on October 15 with a full round of matches across Asia, followed by a further two match days in November. The top two teams from the five qualifying groups and the best placed third team will join Australia, South Korea, Japan, North Korea and the winner of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in Australia in 2015.
Matches in the 16-nation tournament will be played in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle. The AFC Asian Cup 2015 is being jointly-funded by the Australian Government and the Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victorian Governments.
