Clinical Chile spring surprise on Westfield Matildas in Penrith

The Westfield Matildas slipped to a rare home defeat as a well-organised Chile came from behind to prevail 3-2 at Panthers Stadium on Saturday.

Francisca Lara and Carla Guerrero combined to overturn Emily Van Egmond's ninth-minute penalty before Yessenia Huenteo struck late to confirm the Westfield Matildas' first loss in Australia since 2014.

There was time left for Van Egmond to notch a second spot-kick deep into added time but it proved only a consolation as Alen Stajcic's side look to make amends when the teams meet in Newcastle on Tuesday night for the second of the two-match Seven Consulting International Series.

Van Egmond delighted the 15,185-strong crowd early when she sent Christiane Endler the wrong way from the spot, Geraldine Leyton having bundled over Caitlin Foord.

Sam Kerr twice went close to doubling the lead but it was the visitors who equalised against the run of play in the 20th minute.

Laura Alleway's under-hit backpass forced Lydia Williams out of her box and, from Clare Polkinghorne's hurried clearance, Lara took advantage with a deft dinked finish.

Australia might have restored their lead before the interval if not for the impressive Endler, who did well to tip over a long-range Van Egmond drive.

Instead, Chile struck again within three minutes after the restart, Guerrero catching Williams off her line with an instinctive poked finish from a half-cleared free-kick.

A scrambling Su Helen Galaz managed to deny Kerr on the line with just over 15 minutes remaining and, though the Westfield Matildas made all of the running in the closing stages, they were made to pay for pushing forward as Huenteo pounced on Van Egmond's loose pass and poked into the bottom corner.

The midfielder atoned with a calm second penalty following a foul on Kerr at the other end to reduce the deficit, but it came too late for the hosts to salvage a result.
