Match preview: Korea Republic v New Zealand

Wednesday afternoon kicks off with a bang as Korea Republic take on New Zealand knowing a win for either side will guarantee them, at a minimum, second place in the inaugural Cup of Nations.

Both sides have a win to their names and will want to finish the tournament on a high as we approach three months out from the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019.

There’s a lot at stake in this game: Anything less than a win will ensure the Westfield Matildas emerge as the maiden victors, while a win for either side puts the heat on Ante Milicic’s side to grab a point against Argentina.

Regardless of the results, the Cup of Nations has been a festival of football never before seen on Australian shores. 

The quality of football, coupled with fans’ support, has made it a week and a half to remember.

Form

Korea Republic made a real statement of intent in the opening fixture of the Cup of Nations, hammering Argentina 5-0 in an immensely one-sided affair. 

Though it was always going to be tough to back it up against the Westfield Matildas, as the Taeguk Ladies fell 4-1 via a Sam Kerr brace and goals to Lisa De Vanna and Emily Gielnik. 

New Zealand also suffered defeat at the hands of the hosts, holding out for as long as they could before falling 2-0 to Australia. 

They bounced back in the best way possible, beating Argentina 2-0 and providing perhaps the goal of the tournament thanks to Catherine Bott’s ambitious — yet incredible — strike.
